Phonological Disorders

Texas Teletherapy

Is Your Child Hard to Understand? It May Be a Phonological Disorder.

If your child is 5 or older and still difficult to understand — even by familiar adults — a phonological disorder may be the reason. Phonological disorders are not simply "speech delays." They involve systematic patterns of sound errors that affect overall intelligibility and may not resolve on their own without targeted therapy.

The good news: phonological disorders respond very well to the right treatment. At CloudSpeech, we specialize in helping kids whose speech patterns are holding them back — at school, with friends, and in daily life.

What We Treat

At CloudSpeech, we work with children ages 5 and up who have persistent phonological patterns affecting their clarity and intelligibility. Common patterns we treat include:

Velar Fronting — "tat" for "cat," "dod" for "dog" → should resolve by age 3;6

Stopping — "dun" for "sun," "pish" for "fish" → should resolve by age 3–5

Cluster Reduction — "top" for "stop," "pay" for "play" → should resolve by age 4–5

Gliding — "wabbit" for "rabbit" → should resolve by age 6–7

Final Consonant Deletion — "ca" for "cat" → should resolve by age 3;0–3;6

If your child is 5 or older and still using any of these patterns consistently, an SLP evaluation is warranted. These patterns are unlikely to resolve on their own past their expected age of resolution.

Our Approach to Phonological Disorder Treatment

At CloudSpeech, we don't guess. Treatment is built around your child's specific error patterns — not a generic protocol.

Cycles Approach (Hodson) — highly effective for children with low intelligibility; targets sound patterns in cycles for rapid, widespread progress

Minimal Pairs Therapy — helps children understand the meaning difference between sounds, building awareness of their own error patterns

Maximal Oppositions — accelerates change by contrasting sounds that differ in multiple ways

Comprehensive pattern analysis — we identify all active phonological processes before treatment begins so nothing is missed

Parent coaching — families learn exactly how to support practice between sessions

Regular progress tracking with transparent parent updates

Getting the diagnosis right matters. A phonological disorder requires a different treatment approach than an articulation disorder — the wrong approach wastes time and slows progress. At CloudSpeech, accurate assessment drives everything we do.
